When you are getting ready to start writing you might begin to worry if you will encounter “writer’s block.” But I have a few tips you can come back to any time you look at a blank page and can’t bring yourself to write.
What is Writer’s Block?
The Oxford Dictionary defines “writer’s block” as—“The condition of being unable to think of what to write or how to proceed with writing.”
Imagine this: You sit down at your computer, the blank screen staring back at you…and you have no clue what to write next. This is daunting, but there are ways to get through it. Writer’s block is just a mental block, and there are ways to push through. It doesn’t just pop up out of nowhere, here are some reasons you may experience what feels like “writer’s block” when creating your book:
- Being nervous to actually share your story— It takes a lot of bravery to share your knowledge and story, and this can be a big reason writing feels like it isn’t flowing.
- You’re getting caught up on technicalities— If you aren’t a “writer type” you might just be in your head about it all… and this can keep you from getting your book finished.
- You don’t have an outlined next step— If you don’t have an effective outline you will be more likely to experience writer’s block. When you know what comes next, or that you have more information to share you won’t be able to find excuses to not write.
Tips to Get Past Writing Mental Blocks
- Stick to your outline: Again, if you know your next steps this takes away the struggle of not knowing what to write next. By keeping to the ideas you have already planned, you’ll be able to keep going with minimal struggle.
- Work on a different section: If you find yourself having a hard time with a certain section, try to skip ahead to the next chapter or topic. You can always go back and finish what you started. This is your book and you might just need fresh eyes and a fresh topic.
- Take a break: Sometimes your mind will get tired, so taking a break to reset is a great way of rejuvenating yourself and getting back into your groove.
- Take away all distractions: You might think that you’re experiencing writer’s block at times when you are simply distracted. Be sure to put your phone aside, and allow yourself time and space to focus.
- Go somewhere you feel inspired: Sometimes changing your environment can be enough to inspire creativity and get you wanting to write again! Let yourself break your routine and find inspiration every now and then!
